History

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks BPOE is a nationwide organization whose Membership, over 13 decades, has consisted of tens of millions of America’s finest citizens. We love our country and desire to preserve its cherished institutions, traditions and values; respect our neighbors and constantly seek to promote their well-being; and love and enjoy life and believe this enjoyment is increased by sharing it with family, friends and all with whom we come in contact. Membership is open to men and women of all races over the age of 21.

Since its origin on October 12, 1894, the Waterloo Elks Lodge has had a long and prestigious history.

Through the years, it has played an extremely active role in both the community and Elkdom. The Lodge has provided extensive contributions of both money and manpower to hundreds of civic projects in the past and looks forward to being an active part of the community in the future.

The Waterloo Elks Lodge 290 has also provided a number of distinguished Members to the Grand Lodge and State Association. Charles E. Pickett, a charter member of the Waterloo Elks Lodge, was the Grand Exalted Ruler in 1901. The Waterloo Elks Lodge has also provided nine State Presidents for the Iowa Elks Association.

After being located in several downtown buildings in its early years, the Lodge constructed its present facility in 1924.

This stately building, located in downtown Waterloo, was designed to reflect the character of the Old Italian Villas. Extensive use of marble, tile, Bedford brick, black walnut and stained glass enhance the architectural décor which is still preserved today. Hundreds of Brides and Grooms have celebrated their marriages at the Elks though the years. The Waterloo Elks Lodge continues to be a favorite meeting place for local business and community groups, proms, Christmas and birthday parties and more. As an added bonus, Elk Members always have first choice in reserving rooms for this Lodge.  To enquire about renting this exquisite facility, Click here.

The 1950’s and 1960’s were major years of growth where the organization became 4,000 Members strong.

Our organization was the epicenter of socializing and service to the Waterloo and Cedar Falls area then and continues to be a place where friends and Members meet and bring their guests to enjoy a great time. The Elks Lodge in Waterloo currently has many Members who have been Elks for 50 or more years. The business contacts, partnerships and friendships gained through the Elks can last you a lifetime. In January 2007, the Waterloo Elks Lodge facility underwent renovations to preserve its grand and magnificent architecture and to make the Lodge operate more efficiently.

A portion of the renovations went towards remodeling various rooms around the building; including updating the worn décor. Another portion paid special attention specifically to the pressing needs that go unnoticed (replacing the original electrical system, an elevator that has access to every floor of the multi-level facility, and replacing the heating and ventilating system- just to name a few).

In November 2007, the renovations were complete and a fully-restored and beautiful building emerged. The result is an elegant facility that will serve the needs of Members and the community for decades to come.

This superbly kept building, with its excellent facilities, handles the many activities of a very active Lodge with a constantly growing Membership. Interested in using the facility? Click here for more information.
